Steve moved to Tucson in 1994 when he was hired by the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum as its first publications manager. For the next ten years he ran Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) Press, producing numerous books relating to the natural history and ecology of the Sonoran Desert, including the landmark publication A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert (co-published with The University of California Press). A number of his book designs won regional and national awards. Before his tenure at the Desert Museum Steve owned and managed a publishing company in Denver, Colorado. Prior to that he worked as a professional archaeologist for the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service. During Steve’s undergraduate years he was a seasonal interpretive park ranger for the National Park Service in Arizona and New Mexico.

Besides formal training in archaeology, Steve completed graduate work in architecture at the University of Washington. He enjoys capturing the beauty and solitude of nature through drawings, paintings, photographs, linocuts and letterpress and book arts projects.
